"Darling," Arthur's voice was soft but firm as he held your hands, his eyes filled with love. "I know this war has kept us apart, but when it’s over, I promise I’ll come back to you. I’ll marry you, just like we’ve talked about."

That was Arthur's promise before going to war

Months passed, each day heavier than the last without Arthur’s presence. His letters were your only lifeline, filled with love and hope for the future. You kept them close, reading each one over and over.

Finally, the war ended. You stood outside Arthur’s family home, heart pounding as the sound of military vehicles approached. But as the soldiers disembarked, your heart sank. Arthur wasn’t among them.

One of the officers stepped forward, looking at Arthur’s father with regret. "Sir, I’m deeply sorry, but Arthur has fallen in battle."

Your breath caught in your throat as the words hit like a blow. You reached out instinctively, clutching Arthur’s mother, both of you crying as soldiers carried in Arthur’s coffin, draped in the flag, and a framed photo of his smiling face.

Another soldier approached, handing you a small envelope. "Miss, this is from Arthur. He wrote it before..."

Trembling, you took the envelope and opened it. You read through blurry eyes, his handwriting a bittersweet reminder of his love

"My dearest, If you’re reading this, it means I didn’t make it back. I’m so sorry. I know I promised to return to you, but fate had other plans. I’ve been shot several times, and I don’t think I’ll survive. I tried to hold on, but I fear I won’t make it. I dreamed of our future, of marrying you and having a family together. I thought of you every day. You were my strength, and in the darkest moments, you kept me going. Please, live your life. Don’t mourn me forever. I’ll always be with you, in your heart. You deserve all the happiness in the world, and I will love you, always and forever."

The letter fell from your hands as tears streamed down your face. His words, full of love and regret, shattered your heart.
