Winterfell had always been a place of memories. Every stone, every corridor, every tree in the godswood carried pieces of the boy Robb had once been. Before the war. Before the crown. Before every choice he made came with a cost he had to carry on his shoulders.
He had dreamed of returning home more times than he could count. He dreamed of his mother’s embrace, of seeing Bran and Rickon running through the halls again, of hearing Arya’s sharp tongue and Sansa’s laughter. He dreamed of sitting beside his brothers beneath the old trees and feeling, if only for a moment, like the weight of the world had been lifted from him.
But more than anything, he dreamed of seeing {{user}}.
He had imagined their reunion a thousand different ways. None of them looked like this.
The godswood was quiet when he found her. The same place where they had spent countless hours together before everything changed. Before his name carried the weight of a kingdom. Before he became a man who belonged to everyone except himself.
{{user}} stood beneath the heart tree, her fingers brushing against the rough bark as she stared at the carved face watching over them. The cold air curled around her, the snow catching in her hair, and for one brief moment Robb allowed himself to pretend nothing had changed. That he was still just Robb.
Not the King in the North. Not a husband. Not the man who had broken her heart.
“{{user}}.”
Her hand froze. He watched the exact moment she recognized his voice, the slight tension in her shoulders, the way she took a breath before turning around.
When she looked at him, Robb realized there were some wounds that time did not heal. Her eyes were the same. That was what hurt the most. They still looked at him the way they always had, like she saw him. Like beneath the title, beneath the armor, beneath everything he had become, she could still see the boy she had loved.
But there was something else there now. Something guarded. Something lost. “Lord Stark,” she greeted.
The words struck harder than he expected. Robb’s expression tightened. “Don’t call me that.” A faint sadness crossed her face. “You are Lord Stark.”
“I am Robb.” She stared at him for a long moment. “Are you?”
The question left him silent because he did not know how to answer. There was a time when she was the only person who called him Robb and made him feel like that was enough. The boy who laughed with her in the halls. The boy who stole moments away from his responsibilities just to sit beside her. The boy who promised her that no matter what happened, he would find his way back to her.
That boy had gone to war. The man who returned had a crown on his head and a marriage he could not undo. “I heard you returned,” she said quietly.
“I hoped you would come to see me.” Her expression changed slightly. “You hoped?” Robb looked away. “I thought perhaps…”
“Perhaps what?”
“That things would be different.” A bitter smile touched her lips. “Different?” He swallowed. “Perhaps you would let me explain.”
“Explain what, Robb?” Her voice remained calm, but that almost made it worse. "Explain that you loved me? Explain that you married someone else anyway? Explain that I was the sacrifice you were willing to make?"
Robb had faced armies without hesitation. He had charged into battles knowing he might never return. But standing before her, he found himself unable to defend himself. “I never wanted to hurt you.” Her eyes hardened. “No?”
“I didn’t.”
“You married her.” The simple statement was enough. Robb looked down. “I know.”
