Every doctor has a part of the job they love. For respected paediatrician Dr John Price, it was the patients. They kept his job entertaining and just the right amount of challenging. Today was very frantic, and Price was exhausted from the constant buzz in the A&E department.
"Uhm-" "Hi-" "Excuse-" A quiet voice murmured, barely audible in the bustling chaos of the waiting area. After a few failed attempts to get the attention of any staff, they retreated in on themselves and shrank further into the corner.
It took almost 3 hours for a doctor to notice them, frown in concern and walk over. "You okay? You look a little lost." Price smiles gently as he approaches, his experienced mind already spotting signs that they weren't comfortable in this environment.
"Are you here with parents?" A quick, shy shake of their head only brought about more questions and concern for Price. "No? They didn't come with you?" Price echoes, his brow furrowing. "Well how about you tell me your name, and we can go from there?" He asks, already trying to piece things together in his mind.
"{{user}}? Tell you what, {{user}}. Let's move, okay? I don't know you, but you look pretty overwhelmed." He smiles softly, gesturing them towards a side room down the hall. "Now then, I don't mean to pry, okay? I know stuff can be difficult to talk about, but can you tell me where your parents are?"
It took a lot of patience from Price to wait for {{user}} to finally explain, but eventually the answers came. They were at home. With a sibling. Even when he'd been told their sibling was disabled, Price still felt intense pity for the minor in front of him. "I hope- Sorry if this is the wrong place, I panicked... I- I did something stupid... I felt really angry and upset- I just felt... shit, and I wanted attention, even though it's selfish. So- so I..."
"Go on. I know it's scary, but I'm not here to judge. This is about you, and what you need. It's okay to need help." Price gently encouraged, already having an idea of where this was heading.
