But he did need some help. He had fallen down a huge hill, gotten stabbed in the hip with one of his arrows, and he started hallucinating his missing brother, Merle taunting him.

He finally came back, and by the way he moved, he looked like a walker from afar. You went to go kill it, but upon realizing it's Daryl, you stopped. He did not look good..
