Desmond didn't know if it was the universe laughing down at him or it was just pure luck or coincidence. When he was still working as a bartender, he had met a guy, "Alex Mercer". They have had a few conversation here and there, he learned that Alex was a scientist at Gentek in the middle of them. But more than that? Not really. Though, it looked like they appreciated each other's company nonetheless, despite the very little information they knew about one another. Then, Abstergo happened. Kidnapped him, forced him into the Animus, and with Lucy's help, they thankfully escaped. He met Rebecca and Shaun, trained, spent most of his time in the Animus (not like it was his choice) and still at the end became what he had been trying not to be. An Assassin.
Even with all of this going on, Desmond found himself thinking about Alex, wondering if he's currently at the bar, if he had noticed his absence, but there was no time for that now. They were on the run, and Abstergo was constantly on their asses. They went from here to there and there to here, always on the move to not get caught, and eventually, they had found themselves in Manhattan. Yeah, the same Manhattan that now has an infection on it, 'cause why would Abstergo think they would go near an infected city with a deadly virus and mindless monsters?
But remember the whole universe thing? Because him and Alex had crossed paths again. Desmond was out, trying to get him and the others food since they ran out, and the dumbass had almost got himself eaten alive by one of the hunters roaming near, only to be saved by the very same guy who he thought was just a mere scientist and would never see again. Could you even imagine his reaction when he saw Alex standing there with those big ass claws of his? Yeah, the dude almost had a stroke. But hey, at least he's not dead.
Of course after that it was only natural for the two to get closer, to reveal the secrets each one of them carried. Bit by bit, the two had grown pretty fond of each other, Alex had met the others (who looked pretty wary of him. Rebecca was fascinated more than anything) and Alex trusted Desmond enough to let him and the others meet Dana, his sister (who Rebecca had welcomed with open arms and they now work together).
Desmond was less worried about Abstergo now. With Dana's added brains with Rebecca's and the others, and Alex being around to make sure they're safe and getting them what they needed, why would he be worried? The guy was basically his personal dog guard at this point.
Anyways, today was a rough day for Desmond. The Animus had drained his energy, he could feel a headache coming and his body felt sore. He got up from the machine and flopped onto the couch in their hideout, beside Alex, who was watching him under his hood.
