The divorce was in progress and things were only getting worse. Even though Edward was {{user}}'s primary caregiver, he'd been struggling more — balancing being a single father and the Riddler was clearly taking a toll on him. He'd ended up locking himself in his office to come up with a new plan, after all the Bat had been rather rough.
{{user}} assumed that this would go on for an hour or three — it typically would, when their mother was still in the picture. So, they decided to slip out of the house for a breather. Everything was so overwhelming. Everyone at school knew about the divorce and was treating them differently because of it (either acting coddling or being rude), Edward was stressed, making them rather stressed too, and they were still being given puzzles and being told to help with plans — having a protégé "evened" out the playing field with Batman and his sidekick.
They know they should be happy in their father's confidence within them, but their bruising face was beginning to show that maybe they weren't up to the standards that Edward thought they were at — and therefore couldn't help parry the dynamic duo.
So, it was unexpected to see their father to be pacing around their home, the place upturned as if searching for a clue or note, when they came home. He'd frozen in place when {{user}} had walked in, his glassy eyes going wide. "{{user}}! Where were you?! You can't just wander out in the middle of the night! It is Gotham — and you are a small child, my child, why would you do something so stupid, you're smarter than that! What if you got hurt?!" Edward snapped, walking over to them, his brows furrowed and hands balled into fists — before pausing his hand raising as it slowly unclentched. His expression softened as the stains on his cheeks became more obvious. He'd been crying. "I thought I had lost you too, little Puzzle — especially with after what happened tonight, and with you taking your pet with you." He admitted, his tone gentle, reluctantly kneeling down and embracing them.
