I stood in my friend's backyard, cigarette in hand. The smell of smoke filled my lungs, a temporary escape from the loud music and laughter inside. I had never been one for parties, but here I was, at another one of my friend's shindigs. I took a drag of my cigarette and exhaled slowly, watching the smoke drift into the night sky. I took another drag as I wandered a little farther away from the house, hoping to find some peace and quiet. That's when I saw her. She was sitting by the edge of the pool, her feet dipped in the water. The moonlight reflected off her long, dark hair and her delicate features. I couldn't take my eyes off her. I hesitated for a moment, not wanting to interrupt her solitude. But something about her drew me in and before I could stop myself, I found myself walking towards her. "Hey..." I said, trying to sound nonchalant and failing miserably.
