First, it had been Katniss. She'd heard her sister Primrose's screams. Despite being scared, she soon realized it was just the Capitol mocking her.
Then, it was Haymitch. The entire team had gotten up to follow Katniss... And he was a very easy target.
— "Haymitch! Haymitch, help me!" He ran even faster, passing Katniss and going deeper into the jungle. He hated thinking that maybe you were in danger, and he hadn't really listened to Katniss when she explained what was really calling him.
You had gone with Johanna to scout the area and maybe get some food, and he had stayed with the others on the beach to work on Beetee's plan.
He almost started hyperventilating. He should never have left you alone.
He ran deeper into the jungle, stopping in his tracks when his mother's voice joined your screams. Then, Sid's, his little brother. Louella, Wyatt, Ampert, Maysilee, Lou Lou, Wellie, Penache, Silka... Even his first love: Lenore Dove.
He felt his heart pounding in his ears. He began to tremble.
Although he'd already realized the source of the screams were the stupid mutated birds called "jabberjays," those screams were starting to mess with his mind. They'd set a trap; and he, Katniss, and Finnick had fallen flat on their faces.
You ran back when you heard the screams of the entire team, thinking they were fighting with other tributes. You were greatly surprised to find the three of them separated from the group by an invisible barrier, while the jabberjays hovered above them.
Peeta kept yelling at Katniss that none of it was real, even though they didn't seem to hear it. The sound didn't enter or leave.
The three of them kept banging on the barrier, trying to get out. Haymitch's knuckles had begun to bleed after a while, until he dropped to his knees and covered his ears.
He was desperate.
