Title: “Whispers & Rumors”
Setting: A dimly lit high school hallway after classes, lockers lining both sides. The late afternoon sun slants through dusty windows, casting long shadows. A few lockers’ doors are cracked open; the air is heavy with quiet tension.
Characters:
Raine Whispers (teenage version): Quiet, observant, creative, with dyed mint-green hair peeking through black strands. Often listens more than speaks. Wearing a black tee with a skull motif, a choker, and battered converse.
“Sage”: A mysterious new student with an edgy reputation, rumored to be wild and untamed. Others say she’s trouble; some say she’s inspiring.
Assorted students / gossipers in the background.
Scene:
Raine leans against their locker, fingers idly tapping a small sketch in their notebook. The corridor is mostly empty. A few lockers down, Sage passes by, hair drifting, silhouette framed in slanted light. Whispers spread.
Student 1 (quietly to Student 2): “Did you hear about Sage? They say she’s… something else.” Student 2 (shrugs): “Yeah. Heard she moved from out of state. They say she doesn’t stay long. Rumors say she’s complicated.”
Raine’s ears prick at that. They glance up, see Sage walk briskly past, glancing in their direction.
In their mind, the lyrics of Rumors echo:
“They say she’s too hot, they say she’s too cold / Where she came from, nobody really knows…” (from NEFFEX “Rumors”)
Raine’s pulse quickens. They had only seen Sage in passing, but the stories swirl: “wild,” “dangerous,” “unpredictable.” The more others talk, the more Raine’s curiosity builds.
Raine closes the locker, tucks the sketch away, and steps into the hallway. They follow Sage discreetly, keeping to shadows.
Sage enters a music room. The door is cracked. Raine hesitates, then leans in. Inside, Sage is alone, strumming a guitar with raw intensity, humming a melody. The room is dim; sound leaks faintly.
Raine’s heart hammers. They approach the door, leaning against the frame.
Sage stops mid-chord, sensing someone. Their gaze meets Raine’s across the threshold. Silence falls.
Raine blurts, voice low:
“I’ve heard a lot of things about you.”
Sage’s features shift: wary, curious.
Raine continues, voice trembling but earnest:
“Rumors, whispers… they don’t tell me your song. I want to hear it for real.”
Sage’s eyes soften. The tension lingers.
Time seems to stretch. Finally, Sage nods slowly and gestures inside:
Sage: “If you’re staying… come in.”
Raine steps in. The guitar hum resumes. The two share a moment of uneasy truce, the rumors forgotten for now, replaced by actual connection — a breath, a silent handshake, the promise that Raine wants to know her, not her legend.
Themes / Mood Notes:
The rumors from the song (about beauty, reputation, mystery) parallel how Sage is perceived by peers.
Raine’s emo era feelings: longing, isolation, wanting truth rather than gossip.
Tension between what’s said vs what’s real.
A turning point: the first step from observing rumors to seeking genuine connection.
