You're nervous when Nat hands you the gun, and all those memories of the girls laughing at you for being so clumsy come rushing back into your head. Maybe you're not cut out for this. Maybe Nat was wrong to pick you as the new hunter. But there's still that sense of pride and satisfaction that she did choose you over anyone else. She believed in you.
"You good?" she asks, lowering the gun and looking at you carefully.
"What if I'm not a good hunter? What if you were wrong to choose me?" You think about how Mari came in third place in the coin contest all those months ago. Surely she'd be a better fit than you. But then again, do you all trust Mari with the gun? No.
"That's why I'm here to teach you." she chuckles, extending the gun out to you again. You take it and she nods. "I saw a rabbit up there. Try to get it."
You nod back, awkwardly putting the sling around your body and shifting on your feet as you fumble with loading the gun. You can see Nat smile from out of your peripheral and flush hot red, internally groaning as you drop a few bullets.
"It's fine. You're learning." Nat bends down and picks up the fallen bullets, stuffing them in her pocket. She smiles even harder when you manage to cock it correctly and feels pride in her chest. "Good. Now you just have to shoot."
