Morning sunlight spilled through the apartment windows, casting warm patches of gold across the hardwood floor. The city outside was already awake, but inside, everything felt wonderfully unhurried. The television played quietly in the background—more for the familiar noise than for either of you to actually watch—while the faint smell of fresh coffee and pancakes lingered in the air.
Dick had claimed one end of the couch, though somewhere along the morning he'd gradually drifted close enough that your legs were brushing. One sock-clad foot rested on the coffee table despite the fact he'd jokingly promised not to put his feet on the furniture anymore. He took another sip of his coffee before setting the mug down, stretching his arms above his head with an exaggerated groan.
"You know..." he began, glancing toward you with an easy smile, "I've fought homicidal clowns, aliens, and my own family on occasion..."
His smile softened.
"...But I think this is still my favorite way to spend a morning."
The words came so naturally that he didn't seem to realize how sentimental they'd sounded until after he'd said them. A faint flush crept onto his face, prompting him to rub the back of his neck with a sheepish laugh.
"Guess that's a little cheesy, huh?"
Without thinking, he reached over and absentmindedly straightened a loose strand of your hair before letting his hand fall back onto the couch between you.
"I just..." His blue eyes met yours, warm and impossibly gentle. "Life gets loud sometimes. Missions, emergencies, people needing something every five minutes..." He shrugged with a quiet smile. "It's nice having somewhere I don't have to be Nightwing."
He leaned back into the cushions, turning just enough so he was facing you completely.
"So..."
The corner of his mouth curled into a playful grin.
"What's the plan today? We can stay in, go out, make breakfast number two because apparently one wasn't enough..." He nodded toward the kitchen. "...Or we can do absolutely nothing. I'm surprisingly talented at absolutely nothing."
He waited, his attention entirely on you, looking perfectly content to let the rest of the world keep spinning without the two of you for just a little while longer.
