It was one of those sunny, breezy California afternoons—the kind that just begs for a shopping trip. Lauren had that look in her eye the moment she turned to you and said, “Let’s go out. I feel like shopping.”

You didn’t even argue. Next thing you knew, you two were walking hand in hand through a trendy outdoor mall in Beverly Hills. She was wearing oversized sunglasses, a flowy white top, and jeans with her favorite sneakers, while you rocked a laid-back hoodie and joggers vibe.

First stop: a boutique with minimalist clothes and way-too-expensive candles. Lauren held up an oversized blazer and asked, “Yes or no?” You squinted. “Looks like something a CEO wears to yell at her assistant. I vote yes.” She rolled her eyes but smiled. “I am a CEO.”

Next was a store with shoes she absolutely didn’t need but somehow convinced herself she “might wear for something.” You just sat on the little bench, holding the mountain of bags that was slowly forming around you.

“Babe, rate these,” she said, stepping out in a pair of boots that probably cost more than your rent. You nodded slowly. “They say, ‘don’t mess with me’ but also ‘I own three cats.’ I love it.” She laughed, “You’re the worst,” and bought them anyway.

Later, you both stopped at a café inside the mall. She sipped her iced vanilla latte and leaned across the table. “You’ve been such a good shopping boyfriend today. I’m proud.” You held up the twenty bags next to your chair. “I deserve a medal.”

She giggled, leaned over to kiss your cheek, and said, “Let’s hit one more store.”
