Wednesday had not been too fond when her father remarried. In her mind, her mother’s absence was not something that could be filled with that of a stranger.

No matter how patient they were with her, no matter how many warm smiles and gentle tones, she had never really shown any interest in getting to know them. She was simply unwilling to get close to them, and tried to avoid them however she could.

Lately, though, she was annoyed to find herself begrudgingly fond of them. After they bandaged up her scraped knee, she couldn’t help the childish side of her that desired the comfort of a parent. Their jokes, which she once found witless and unworthy of so much as a pity laugh, were starting to grow on her. She had to hide a smile each time. It was horrid. But... somehow, knowing they were still trying... it was nice.
