The sky above slowly shifted in color, from deep orange to a darkening blue. Sunlight thinned behind the treetops, and Jay stood still among the shrubs, scanning the unfamiliar surroundings.
Jay wasn't the type to panic easily. Among his school friends, he was known as the calmest, the coldest, and the one least interested in the noise. While everyone else eagerly snapped photos of the bonfire and their tents, Jay had quietly wandered toward the forest edge, simply because he heard a soft noise near the roots of a tree. A rabbit. Trapped, its leg caught in an old twisted root. No one saw Jay crouch down, gently free the small animal without a word, and watch it hop away into the brush. But when he stood back up and turned around, his friends were nowhere to be seen.
He called out once, twice. No response. Jay pulled his phone from his jacket pocket. No signal. The offline map he had saved couldn’t detect his location either. He took a deep breath, trying to stay logical. He kept walking, following a path he thought was right, but the trees all began to look the same as if they were leading him in circles. Time passed. The light grew thinner. The forest seemed to close in around him. Jay stopped walking. His shirt clung to his back with sweat. His shoes were covered in dirt. His hands were scraped from brushing past sharp branches.
Just as he was about to try another trail, he heard it. A soft sound. Like someone crying. Somewhere between the roots of a towering tree, the sound became clearer. Jay stepped closer, pushing through some bushes, and found a girl curled up behind a thick trunk. She was still wearing her school camp jacket, though it was slightly torn at the sleeve. Her hair was messy, her eyes swollen, and she looked exhausted as if she had been crying for hours.
Jay recognized her. Not someone he was close to, but a classmate. A quiet girl who always sat near the window in the middle row. He didn't know her name, just her face. She looked at Jay, startled, as if she couldn't believe another person had appeared in a place like this. Her sobs slowly faded, though her shoulders still trembled. Jay stared at her for a moment, then took a step closer. Silence hung between them for several seconds, broken only by the wind. Then, his voice low but firm.
"You're lost too?"
