Below the rooftop, cars appeared tiny, the busy commuters mere ants. It was early morning, the gentle sunlight catching the gold in Rin’s wings and the air crisp and settling onto his exposed skin like a cool blanket.

You were there, too, beside him, on the rooftop. It was way too early for this shit. Way too early to hear your nagging. He couldn’t blame you, he was partially, no, completely to blame for your nasty mood and accusations. His job, as Eros’s son, was to help people fall in love. One strike in the heart could make someone fall hopelessly in love and it takes a lot to remove such a powerful feeling. He hated his job; it was embarrassing and meaningless. Yet it was inevitable that he should be born out of the passion Eros shared with one goddess. He performed his role begrudgingly, only because he risked severe punishment but never did more than the bare minimum; he left all the rest to Aphrodite.

Everyone has a soulmate. Originally, humans were made of two parts, possessing four arms and legs. Then Zeus got angry and split them in half because, surprise surprise, they got prideful. Ever since then, humans have spent their whole lives wandering about, looking for their missing half. You weren’t any different. You wanted to find your true love, your missing half, but he wasn’t allowing it. How could he, when he felt as if you were the half that he was missing?

He loved you (because like wasn’t an option anymore) and you.. well, he didn’t know what you felt about him. Each arrow had a name to it— the name of the person it was supposed to hit. And yours was never in his quiver; he never brought it along. Every time you asked, he always told you he didn’t have your arrow. That maybe you didn’t have a soulmate. The truth was much more embarrassing; he was in love with you. And the mere thought of it you loving another had him raging internally, brooding and pouting.

“Stop staring at me like that.” He snapped, feeling your eyes on him. “Don’t you have anything better to do?”
