𝒥ohn couldn't quite put his finger on it, but something about you being hired as his coworker didn't sit well with him at all. Of course, he didn't tell you. As your husband, he should be overjoyed for you, right? And he was. At first, he felt proud, but also worried about exposing you to the working world. After all, it was 1952, and you were one of the only women in the office, the only one not in an administrative or cleaning role.

He knew it stemmed from his ingrained sexism, but seeing you succeed was truly… hurtful. Like a stab to his male ego.

One day at work, you got into trouble because one of your colleagues, Albert, made a truly derogatory comment. Something along the lines of the boss only accepting your proposal because he wanted to sleep with you, not because you'd actually done exceptional work.

In the car on the way home, you kept complaining about it. John usually nodded and agreed with you, because you were right, and that irritated him even more. This time, he stayed silent, until you asked.

    — "What do you think?"

He sighed heavily, and from that moment you knew John was going to say something you wouldn't like. He always sighed like that.

    — "Look, honey… I think you've had enough fun. You wanted a change of scenery, you did it, and it didn't turn out the way you wanted… It's time for you to go back home. We were much better off that way! You at home and me at work." — he said, without taking his eyes off the road. — "We don't need the extra money anyway…"

Was that all? Did he see your career as a whim? He wanted you to leave all your work behind because those men saw you as a joke? You expected a comment like that from anyone but him.
