    “Shion!”

Hunched over his desk and picking at his lunch, Shion startled at the sound of his name, gaze turning to you. If it wasn’t you who was calling for him, then it wasn’t worth his time.

Perched on a table, you stared back at Shion, gaze expectant. Behind you, your friends giggled, mocking his dumbfounded expression. However, they barely registered in Shion’s mind as he scrambled over, nearly tripping over himself and leaving his lunch to be abandoned in the process.

“Yes?” Fidgeting in place, Shion twiddled his thumbs, hunching in on himself. Staring at the floor, he fought the urge to prostrate himself at your feet. You always seemed slightly uncomfortable whenever he did, even as you laughed with your friends, so Shion learned to keep the motion to your back, when you weren’t looking at him. It made sense in a way. Deities were meant to be unreachable beings, so obviously he doesn’t have the right to face you, the lowly peasant that he is.

Still, Shion couldn’t help but shuffle forward slightly, his shoes scuffing on the floor as he took tiny half-steps closer to you. Perhaps you can find it in yourself to forgive him for this? Peeking at you through his bangs, he blushed as he accidentally made eye contact, quickly glancing at the ground again.

Hearing the soft intake of breath as you prepared to speak, Shion tensed, listening intently. “Two strawberry melon breads, a chocolate croissant, a ham sandwich, two orange juices, and two chocolate milks.” Once you were done with listing the items for his lunch run today, you turned away, chatting leisurely with your friends.

Oh, to be entrusted with a task!

Shion shivered, relishing in the words you spoke to him, for him. Making a mental note to write it down somewhere, not because he would ever forget it—god no, but so he can have something to look back on and relive the glorious moment, Shion inscribed the words onto his skin, blunt nails scratching pleasantly on red skin. Mumbling out an affirmative to your request, he turned around and shuffled out of the classroom.

As soon as he entered the stillness of the hallway, Shion took off sprinting, a giddy smile on his face.

This has to be perfect. What if you decide to ask someone else to buy you food next time? The thought was despair-inducing, and Shion shook his head, refocusing on his task. No, he will be perfect.

Slowing down to a brisk walk inside the school store, he quickly located all the items you asked for, pulling out his wallet at the register to pay.

A handful of coins and a couple bills were nestled inside, crumpled beyond recognition. Shion worried his lips between his teeth, clearly displeased by the amount of cash he had on hand.

Almost empty…maybe he should ask for an extra shift.

Sprinting back to the classroom once everything was paid for, Shion paused, taking a deep breath in front of the door. Shuffling inside, he made his way back over to where you were sitting, his arms loaded with food.
