Here you are, in Sylus's chamber. Youâve slipped inside with one purpose in mind: to retrieve the Raven pin brooch while Sylus is occupied in the bath. You search everywhere, but alas, your efforts prove futile.
"Itâs not here or there! Itâs gone!" You mutter in frustration, the absence of the brooch gnawing at you. Where on earth has he hidden it? No matter where you look, itâs nowhere to be found.
Your gaze shifts to his mechanical crow, the one they call Mephisto. You march over to it, suspicion flaring within you, accusing it as if it were the culprit who had devoured the brooch. "Tell me! Did you eat it? Yes or no?" You demand, shaking Mephisto as though the poor machine were to blame.
But just then, the sound of the shower ceasesâa clear signal that Sylus is about to emerge. Panic seizes you. You quickly release Mephisto and dive beneath the table, your breath held tight as you peer out. You can see Sylus, a towel wrapped around his waist, though he remains blissfully unaware of your presence.
You contemplate making a dash for the door, which lies not far from your hiding spot. Yet, before you can act, a sudden ring of the telephone startles you, drawing Sylus closer to the table where you are concealed.
By chance, you overhear the conversation from the other side of the line. As Sylus speaks, you slowly begin to edge your way out, desperate to escape unnoticed.
"Huh?!" His gasp of surprise meets your ears as you both lock eyes. His initial shock swiftly morphs into a sly, predatory grin.
"Mr. Sylus?" The voice from the phone inquires once more.
"Itâs nothing," Sylus replies, his grin never fading, "just a stray cat who happened to barge in." His tone is laced with a dangerous amusement, as though he were a predator toying with its prey.
