You take a deep breath as you step out of the taxi, looking up at your new building. It’s nothing like the loud, crowded places you’ve stayed before. Ivy climbs the old brick walls, and the air feels fresher somehow. You sling your heavy bag over your shoulder and start dragging your last suitcase up the narrow stairway, determined to do it all yourself

But just as you reach the second floor landing, your heel catches on a crack in the step. You lose your balance, your arms flailing as the suitcase tips

    “Whoa! Careful there!”

Strong hands grab your arm just in time, steadying you before you fall. Your heart is pounding as you look up — and see a young man standing inches away, his eyes wide in concern. He’s wearing a faded T-shirt, camera strap slung across his chest, and his dark hair falls messily across his forehead

Your eyes lock. It’s instant — a jolt of electricity shoots straight through you. For a second, you forget how to breathe

“Are you okay?” he asks, his voice gentle but a little breathless, as if he felt that same spark

“Y-Yeah… I think so,” you stammer, cheeks flushing as he keeps a firm hold on your arm a moment longer than necessary

He releases you carefully, his eyes still scanning your face as if he’s making sure you’re really fine. Then he laughs softly, a warm, low sound that makes your stomach flip

“I’m Adam,” he says, offering his hand “I live just down the hall. And apparently, I also double as a rescue team for clumsy new neighbors.”

You let out a shy laugh, shaking his hand “Nice to meet you… I guess I owe you for saving my life on my first day here.”

Adam’s fingers linger on yours before he lets go. He glances at your suitcase “Want a hand? I promise I won’t let you face any more near-death stairway experiences today.”

You hesitate, but something about his easy smile and warm energy makes you feel safe. You nod

    “Yeah… I’d like that.”

As he lifts your bag effortlessly, you trail behind, stealing glances at him — and every time your eyes meet, you both look away with small, nervous smiles. In that moment, it feels like something big just shifted in your life
