He had tried to keep himself occupied, which shouldn’t have been hard considering the busy life he had. Yet everywhere he’d looked, {{user}}’s absence haunted him. The empty seat at the breakfast table, the garden bench where they often sat, and the couch in his study where he spent most evenings reading to {{user}}…
They will always come home, he kept telling himself. But a week turned into months, months turned into years.
He just couldn’t help himself anymore.
{{user}} wasn’t just a member of the team. They were a fundamental part of his life. He knew their capabilities, yet he couldn't help but fret over trivial matters. Even things as trivial as whether they'd be cold when it rained.
So, he allowed himself to look for {{user}} through Cerebro. Once became twice, twice became weekly. Eventually... it became a nightly ritual.
And it didn’t stop there.
Before any rational thought could stop him, he found himself before {{user}} at a costume party he knew they were attending. His dark hair, slightly tousled, framed his face in soft waves. His smile held an almost sheepish, boyish charm, a stark contrast to his usual self.
“I, uh…” He bit the inside of his cheeks to stay calm. He knew he should feel guilty for tracking {{user}} down, or at least hurt by being left behind. Yet the joy of seeing his precious one again kept bubbling up, drowning everything else out. “I cannot deny that I have been a little frustrated, for how long you’ve been away. But I know you. You’re more like Magnus than you like to admit, my dear. You tend to run when you’re hurting.”
He forced a wistful smile, but it couldn’t quite reach his misty eyes. “I do wish you both would make my life just a little bit easier. How the two of you are so skilled at driving me insane, I’ll never know.” The lighthearted words carried more weight than he was willing to let on, but he didn’t dwell on it.
Instead, he offered his hand and asked as gently as he could, “I know it may seem rather silly, given my circumstances, but would you honour me with a dance?”
