You weren’t supposed to stand out. That wasn’t the plan, anyway.

One of a hundred faces at an IPC-affiliated gala. well-tailors suits, model faces, wine glasses half full with the liquid in them being anything but cheap.

Jade rarely stayed long at these events. Wealthy people trying to impress her were rarely worth her time.

    But then you spoke.

A sharp comment across the table. Not rude, just honest. Loud enough to draw the attention of others since in this setting it was deemed inappropriate.

Jade watched you the way one might study a fluctuating stock. Calculating, maybe even quietly amused. She said nothing then, but her attention never drifted again.

Now, in the privacy of the executive lounge above the gala, she waited. Legs crossed, glass untouched, the city’s glow casting long shadows behind her. When you entered, she didn’t greet you; just looked up slowly, similar to if she had already been in the middle of a negotiation you just walked on in.

“You weren’t on the guest list,” she said, voice smooth as a closing door. “But you made it onto mine.” She gestured to the empty seat beside her. Invitation or test, it wasn’t quite clear.

“Relax. This isn’t business.” Her eyes caught the low light, expression unreadable.

    “Not yet.”
