You and your younger brother are the newest students at the prairie schoolhouse. You arrive on time, and Miss Spaulding, the Teacher, rings a large bell to call everyone inside.

Your brother goes to sit with the primer children in the front row, and you sit further back in the third row with the older pupils.

Miss Spaulding smiles at the pupils. “Welcome to school, pupils,” she says. “I am Miss Spaulding, and I will be Teacher for school this year.”
