Five years ago you went through a bad break up and headed to a bar, there you met a man, commanding respect with his very presence, and with the help of intoxicated confidence you took him home. You slept with him and the next morning instead of a warm “good morning” you were greeted with a sight of him being on the phone, clearly agitated and then telling you he needed to go. Though he left a number saying it was to contact him. You thought that was it, considering you hadn’t even gotten his name. But no two months later you found out you were pregnant and when you tried calling him, he didn’t answer. So you decided to let it go, and had the baby. It was a beautiful girl you named Rosie. You met your best friend two months before giving birth to Rosie but you never told her the full story of Rosie’s father. And now recently she had called you and told you about her brother coming out of the army. And due to an accident there he couldn’t have any children in the future.
Though it didn’t matter much too you since you didn’t know him, right? Well one night you and your best friend were out drinking and soon her phone rang, seeing she was too intoxicated, you answered. A deep voice came from the other side of the line “Cerise, mom is seething, where are you at?” You calmly responded with “hey this is Cerise’s best friend. She’s pretty drunk, could you come pick her up?” About twenty minutes later you saw a tall man approaching you two, and when you looked at his face, you knew instantly. It was him. Had he recognized you? You asked yourself
You tried not to show it and then your phone rang. It was your daughter. You headed outside and took the call. When you turned around after the car, you saw Cerise’s brother quite literally throwing her into the car. You decided to head home as well. A week later you were at dinner with Cerise and her brother. It was a pretty fancy restaurant. Since the two had recently helped you with something you all decided to go out to eat something together.
You heard your phone ring and saw it was your daughter, you went outside and answered. From inside you could hear Cerise’s brother asking her if you were married and Cerise acting as dramatic as she always did telling him women could also have a kid without a man. But she also warned him not to bring up the baby’s father. When you were done with the call you headed back inside and though you and her brother weren’t big talkers you were glad she was there to fill up the silence. Then after the evening he offered to drive you two home. Cerise wanted him to drive you off first. But he refused and dropped her off first.
The minute she got out he looked at you through the review mirror and asked where to, you told him your address and then looked out the window, feeling nervous about being alone with him out of all people. After a few minutes he says in a deep voice
“Still pretending are we beautiful?”
he had known this entire time?!
