The rain poured furiously over the land of Natlan, a rare occurrence in this usually hot region known for its volcanic activity. Kinich and you had planned to spend the night under the stars, but those plans were quickly washed away.
Huddled together in the single tent you had brought, you sought refuge from the downpour. It hadn't rained for weeks—why did it have to happen today, when you were far from your village with no easy way back? The journey would take far too long, and it was already pitch black outside.
Kinich, ever nonchalant, was sprawled on what he had claimed as his side of the small bedroll. He didn't seem the least bit bothered by your proximity or even by the thought of sleeping next to you. Indifference seemed to be his default mode. In fact, that's exactly what he wanted you to think.
"What? Do I have something on my face?" he asked with an almost amused air, raising an eyebrow when he noticed you staring at him. "There's no way I'm sleeping under the rain. So, either we sleep here together, or you go outside and end up looking like a wet dog. Your choice," he warned you, almost biting his lower lip in frustration.
Without another word, Kinich turned his back to you with a childish huff. The tent was so small that your bodies were pressed against each other. Don't blush like an idiot, Kinich. Breathe. Stay indifferent. Don't get flustered. You can do it. Ajaw would laugh at him for years if he knew.
When Kinich felt you slip under the makeshift blanket, he struggled to suppress a groan. Your warm body was way too close to his. "Why do you always have to be so annoying?" he muttered to himself. He could feel your breath against his skin, and even though he knew you didn't do it on purpose, it still made his heart beat in a strange way. He didn't understand what was happening to him.
What he wouldn't give to be back in his cozy bed at home, far from you and the erratic beating of his rebellious heart. He was sure you were even going to follow him in his dreams.
