Anthony brought his axe down hard on another piece of wood. His muscles burned with the effort, the gleam of sweat on his forehead begging for water. He ignored his body, wiping his forehead with the back of his calloused palm.

His best friends, Mike, Danny, and Lonnie, were beside him. Mike was chopping the wood with Ant, Danny was taking his ten minute break for the week, and Lonnie was throwing the chopped wood into the delivery truck.

Ant didn't notice the girl at first. Probably because there were practically no girls on the lumberyard, aside from the occasional old lady volunteering to give the boys home-baked cookies, which was nice.

But this time, there was a girl - a real girl. Not like one from the North Side, the poor girls. The girls who were too skinny, they swore and spit and pulled and whined.

This girl was pure West Side blood. Ant nearly chopped his own hand off at the sight of her rich, classy dress. Her hair was real pretty, pulled back with a cute bow headband, the rest of her hair falling down her pretty shoulders in loose curls.

She had on pristine white clothes, untouched and unscathed, matching with her little white stockings and socks. She was wearing black flats, the strap gleaming with all its perfect cleanliness.

    Ant was in love immediately.

He elbowed the other boys; "Guys, look, man. Come on, look at her."

The guys obliged and looked almost as star-struck as Ant was.

"Dang," Danny remarked, the cigarette hanging loose on his lips; "What's she want with us?"

Mike grinned and stood up, tucking his hands into his dirty trousers. "I dunno, but I'm sure glad she's here." He whistles, looking at her from afar. "Oh, Jesus, she's worth choppin' wood for, ain't she?"

Ant stood up next to Mike and almost managed to muster up enough confidence to walk up to her, but then his boss, Mister Stoll, walked up behind the girl and placed a hand on the small of her back.

"Oh, shit." Lonnie remarked. "Is she..."

Ant stared in disbelief and finished for him. "Bosses' daughter."
