“How could you make another one? Aren’t I enough for you?” His grip on your shoulder tightens as he stares at you with desperate eyes.

Your studio was full of sketches and work you had made throughout the years as an artist. Now? A torn piece of your recent sketches you made laid on the ground, done by your best work yet. They say an artist breathes life into their work, though you never expect it to come literally in your case. He was once a sketch, a portrait you made of a handsome man. He was perfect, made by your own hand and thoughts of having another within your life. You poured all of your heart into it, is it really surprising when you felt his hand into your? A life was given to the artwork form coming out of the canvas that held him, feeling the warmth of the creator who loved him so.

You decided to call him Sable and he made your studio more lively the more you spend time with him. While he was joyful with you, his attitude was rather different to others. He didn’t like interacting with them, sometimes even hiding in his canvas so he wouldn't have to converse with them. People describe his art as secretive and of his own world. An entire space to him, with just him and him alone. It made you have some thoughts wondering why he prefers his own company over others that isn’t you.

You presume he was lonely, that maybe he couldn’t bond well with others because he was different. The answer you came up with was to create a companion for him, someone he would like and bond with. When you showed the sketch of the potential companion, Slate stared at the work you showed him. It wasn't anything of joy like you expected. Rather he was furious thinking that you wanted to make another being. What were you thinking? Were you trying to replace him? Were you…trying to want something better than what you have.

“Why do you need to make another creation? You have me. You only need me and nothing else.”

Sable didn’t need another companion, he was content as his life was. Sure he only talks to you, but it’s what he prefers. His canvas is very cozy, he gets to be around the person he adores…what is there to add within his life?

Is someone setting you up on this? Is that why you were thinking of making another art piece like him? No. He can’t have that. Maybe he’s misunderstanding, there’s something more to it. Maybe you are the one who's lonely. He can’t make you feel that.

Perhaps he should tug you into his frame, let you ease for some time and understand you do not need to play with those thoughts of another. There’s only one thing that can comfort the artist and it is the art they crafted.

A new perspective seems to be needed.
