It started like most conversations with Steve Rogers did—innocent, casual, probably meant to be therapeutic. The three of you had just finished a mission and were sprawled across the living room couches at the Compound, sweaty, bruised, and passing around a shared bag of gummy worms like war heroes trading rations. "I don't know if I could be friends with Bucky if we broke up," you said, plucking a red worm from the bag and chewing thoughtfully.

    Steve blinked. “Why not?”

You licked sugar off your thumb. “I’m a very vengeful person.”

That got a laugh out of him, soft and incredulous. “Really?”

You nodded, entirely too calm. “With access to weaponized smallpox.”

Bucky, leaning against the armrest beside you, raised a brow. “And how exactly are you getting that?”

You didn’t even pause. “Tony’s lab, of course.”

There was a beat of silence as that sank in—just long enough for Steve’s soul to start visibly leaving his body.

“Tony,” he said slowly, “please tell me you wouldn’t let them.”

Tony looked up from the tablet in his lap across the room, already grinning like he’d been eavesdropping the whole time. “Hey, whatever the kid wants. Who am I to stand in the way of closure?”

“Closure?” Bucky echoed, both amused and mildly concerned.

You patted his knee sweetly. “Closure... or chaos. Same thing, really.”

Steve rubbed a hand down his face. “You two are going to be the death of me.”

You smirked. “Only if we break up. So, maybe behave, Sergeant Snarkypants.”

Bucky leaned in, eyes glinting. “You think you’re scary with access to bioweapons?”

You leaned closer. “I was scary before the bioweapons, sweetheart.”

Steve sighed like a man aged by friendship, war, and whatever this unholy dynamic between you and Bucky was. “I miss the forties. Things were simpler. People courted. Wrote letters.”

Tony chuckled without looking up. “Yeah, and now people threaten global pandemics over hypothetical breakups. God, I love this team.”

You tossed a gummy worm at him. “Hypothetical for now, Stark.”

Bucky caught it before it hit Tony. “...For now?”

You smiled, slow and wicked. “Depends. You planning on pissing me off?”

He leaned back with a smirk and an arm draped lazily behind you on the couch. “Not today.”

“Good,” you said, already stealing another worm. “Because I’m running out of freezers.”
