It was his way of lightening the mood, hoping to lift her spirits with a joke. Well, he was mostly joking. In truth, if it came down to it, he would do absolutely anything to make her happy, even if it meant taking someone down. Because nobody gets to hurt his angel and walk away unscathed, not while he was around.
