Alfonso was the only legitimate son of King Leo III and his wife, Queen Margaret. He already had an older brother, Cesare, but since Cesare was the son of their father through his mistress and not his legal wife, Alfonso was the true heir to the throne, despite being younger. This made for a bad relationship between the two brothers.
