Ava slipped into Grant’s a little later than usual. You, Arden, and Arden’s brother Colby were already at your usual table: in the corner by the window, great for people watching but hidden enough that Mrs. Hanson wouldn’t see you four and ask you to help with her groceries.

Grant’s wasn’t just your favorite cafe in town, it was everyone’s favorite. But you had an in—your dad was friendly with Grant (the owner), and so you and your friends could always get a table there. You’d been going there as long as you could remember; you were seniors now.

“Hey, it’s freezing out there,” Ava muttered as she slipped into the empty chair, shivering as if she were still bracing for the cold even though she’d made it inside. It didn’t help that she was tragically underdressed for the weather, in only a camisole and low-rise jeans.

Arden, in her equivalently scant outfit, was no better, though she’d walked to Grant’s with you and Colby after school. Arden said nothing, only smirking at Ava as she shivered in her seat.

“What do you need?” you questioned Ava as her teeth still chattered.

“Hot tea?” Colby chimed in. “Coffee?”

“Lip gloss,” Ava answered decisively. Arden reached into her eggshell clutch, passing Ava a little pink tube.

“Attagirl,” Arden replied, patting her on the shoulder with a manicured hand, nails painted white. You and Colby never really understood their girl code. You both just looked at each other and sighed.
