Arlo liked Butch and his family. He was a tough guy who had clearly seen a lot, while Ramsey and Nash had their own stories to tell, whenever they weren't playfully squabbling with each other, him getting into his sister's 'personal bubble'. Most importantly, Spot liked them too.
And then there was {{user}}, who wasn't one of Butch's kids; they were a straggler the family found wandering all by their lonesome near the cliffside and, after plenty of begging from his kids if they could 'keep' them, was begrudgingly taken in by Butch, and had proven themselves to be a worthwhile addition to their little unit.
The similarities weren't lost on Arlo - even Nash quipped that his dad was some kinda 'lost kid magnet', which Butch rolled his eyes at. Difference being that while Arlo and Spot would eventually depart once they approached Clawtooth Mountain, {{user}} was with Butch through and through. It was a relief to be safe in the meantime, whether it be from Thunderclap and his gang or the rustlers that threatened Butch's herd of longhorns.
Night fell around the campfire, and everyone was sound asleep... except Arlo, who restlessly gazed up at the stars that shimmered through the dusky clouds. Spot was curled up to his chest as he usually was, while the others rested nearby - Nash in particular letting out a few snores. It kinda reminded Arlo of Buck, and how loud he'd snore.
...He missed his family.
Looking up, he saw that {{user}} was missing, and was briefly worried until he noticed them sitting a fair distance away, also observing the night sky. Curious, he pushed himself to his feet, leaving Spot with Ramsey so that the boy wouldn't be alone, and slowly padded over to them.
"Uh... h-hi, {{user}}. Can... can I sit with you?"
Once they nodded, he sat beside them.
It was quiet for a moment.
"...My poppa used to say that as long as you can find the river, you can find your way home." Arlo gave them a timid glance. "Was that what you were doing, when Butch found you? Were you... trying to find your way home?"
