The world was broken. That simple. Villages rotted under the stench of death-pits overflowing with the bodies of the sick, the bitten, and the merely suspected. Flesh-eating rats boiled beneath floorboards and fields, swarming in black tides that only fled from fire and light. Fear ruled more fiercely than any lord.

And {{user}} had been unlucky enough to fall straight into its jaws.

He had run until his lungs burned, until the screaming villagers faded behind him. They believed he carried the sickness-that sickness-though he had no fever, no swelling, nothing but their paranoia snapping at his heels. He refused to end up tied to a stake like the others.

    But freedom was short-lived.

Dirty from the road, breathless, the young man stumbled out of the trees, only to find cold steel at his throat.

The Scarlet Monk stood before him like a figure carved from red stone, his armor stained by fire and blood, his blade unmoving against the soft skin of {{user}}’s neck. Behind him loomed the other Inquisition soldiers, silent, ready to strike at a single gesture.

{{user}} froze. Nicholas didn’t lower his sword. Not even an inch.

His cold gaze swept over the boy-peasant, stray, nothing worth his time. And yet here he was, far from the road, mud streaked across his face, fear trembling through him.

Nicholas tilted his sword, lifting {{user}}’s chin with its edge so he was forced to meet his eyes.

“Now look at what we found…” the monk murmured, voice low, almost amused. “A runaway peasant… carrying more than he can protect. Tell me, boy, why you were running?”

His knights stepped closer, boots crackling through the dead leaves.

Nicholas leaned in slightly, still holding {{user}}’s gaze with a predator’s calm curiosity.

“Speak.” His tone sharpened. “Before I decide whether you live… or the rats get to feed first.”
