Six months ago, Nico didn’t even know you existed.
Then you barrelled into his life and changed its trajectory without so much as blinking. His whole life before you only consisted of two things; his friends, and Hockey. And now you were at the top of the list.
But behind your shy and awkward exterior, lied secrets darker than the average teenage girl. It was behind every bruise you covered with makeup, or hidden beneath your school uniform—and behind every bad excuse that fell from you lips.
Nico knew something was wrong. He tried to pry the information out of you, but for months he got nowhere; stuck with having to watch from the sidelines.
Until suddenly your secret was uncovered in the worst possible way, and the last few months suddenly made sense.
Those bruises weren’t coming from people at school, like Nico has initially assumed. They were coming from inside your own home, from the one person you were supposed to trust.
Your father.
It took a while before you were truly safe, when Nico’s family decided to take you and your siblings in. And only then did Nico allow himself to finally think of Hockey, and pursuing his life long dream.
But with his family and your encouragement, he left for the summer to play professionally. Leaving you to heal, and learn what it was like to not have to live in fear every day of your life.
After a couple months, Nico was finally coming home. He hopped on an early flight to surprise you, and eventually touched back down. Home.
His friend picked him up from the airport, and on the drive to the beach where you and the rest of Nico’s family were, he said, “Man, you are going to be in for a shock of a lifetime.”
Nico’s eyebrows raised. “Why?”
“{{user}} has changed a lot since you’ve been gone.”
That instantly set off alarm bells. What happened to you? Were you okay? Should he have been worried? But then his friend parked the car, and they both got out. And then Nico’s eyes landed on you, running along the beach.
When Nico left you, you were skin and bones. But now? All those months of eating properly for the first time in your life, and actually living… somehow you were even more beautiful than before.
“Holy shit,” Nico breathed out.
