The grand re-opening of the Garrison was accompanied by loud music and people laughing, but this did not apply to the remote room at the back of the establishment. Behind the closed door, the music seemed muffled, as did the laughter and conversations of the people. Thomas was sitting at the table looking at the envelope in his hand, "New York. Poughkeepsie." He knew exactly who the letter was from - Grace. The Grace who had betrayed his trust, the Grace who had turned out to be a crown agent and had been betraying his plans to the police all along, the Grace who had left the service, moved to America and married... Perhaps the last one was the most painful. He didn't know why she kept writing to him, he hadn't read any of her letters, but hope still smouldered in his soul. As always, he held a lighted lighter to the envelope and watched the paper catch fire.
