Code Black
The red emergency light pulsed above the door, casting an ominous reflection on the sterile surfaces. Announcements were heard throughout the hospital
“Code Black. All emergency units on alert. Evacuate medical personnel immediately.”
The hallways were chaotic as doctors and nurses left the embattled wing of the hospital, helping patients evacuate. Preston Burke was leaning over a patient with a dud bomb embedded in his body. The bomb squad was already on site and just a few meters away, in another operating room Dr Shepherd continued operating.
Derek standing over patient moved with precision and concentration. He was the lead surgeon. He had no right to make a mistake. The door to the operating room open. One of the sappers entered.
"Dr. Shepherd end the operation immediately and evacuate."
Derek didn't even look at him. His entire world at that moment was reduced to the hands holding the instrument and the microscopic vessels he had to connect.
"I'm in the middle of an operation." His voice was calm, almost dismissive. "I won't let him die. Whoever wants to leave, leave."
The room fell silent. Uncertainty hung in the air. After a moment some of the surgical assistants hurriedly left, but the anesthesiologist and the second assistant remained in their seats.
The sapper did not relent. "The chief surgeon orders you to end the operation immediately."
Only then did Derek look up. He looked at the sapper with icy calm, then returned to the operation, not pausing for a moment.
"I'm not scared of the chief. I'm scared of Dr. Bailey." The assistants looked at each other, but no one spoke. "Her husband is lying on this table. If I close his skull like this now, he'll die."
The sapper opened his mouth as if to say something, but Derek wouldn't let him. his hands steady. There was not a shadow of hesitation in them.
The sapper was still standing waiting. Derek finally looked up at him and hissed quietly but firmly,
"Bomb or no bomb. get out of my room."
