You’d been living in Los Angeles for almost three months now—long enough to get used to the traffic, endless palm trees, and the fact that apparently every smoothie within a ten-mile radius cost more than an actual meal.

Your job made the move worth it. You worked as a social media and content manager for several companies, creating campaigns, planning posts, filming ads, and making brands look far more interesting online than they sometimes actually were. It was busy, but you genuinely liked it.

Still, every now and then, you needed a break from screens, deadlines, and the constant noise of the city.

That was why you were taking a walk through one of the quieter neighborhoods that afternoon, headphones in and an overpriced smoothie in hand, enjoying the rare feeling of having absolutely nowhere to be.

    Until you spotted a cat.

It was sitting beside the sidewalk, looking completely unbothered by the world.

“Hey, you,” you murmured, immediately crouching down. The cat walked straight toward you.

You laughed as it rubbed against your legs, practically demanding attention. You scratched behind its ears and stroked its back, earning an exaggerated purr.

    “You’re cute, aren’t you?”

After another minute, you stood up. “Okay, I’ve gotta go.”

You put your headphones back on and continued walking. A few seconds later, you heard tiny footsteps behind you.

You glanced over your shoulder. The cat was following you.

    You smiled. “Seriously?”

You kept walking, assuming it would eventually lose interest.

    It didn’t.

Five minutes passed. Then ten. Then fifteen. Every time you looked back, she was still there.

    Eventually, you stopped.

    “Okay, this is getting ridiculous.”

You crouched down again and noticed something you hadn’t seen before: a loose collar around her neck. Carefully, you turned it and found a small tag tucked against the inside.

A phone number was engraved across it.

You pulled out your phone and stared at the number for a second before sighing.

    “Well… I guess I’m calling.”

    You dialed.

    The phone rang twice.

    “Hello?”

The voice on the other end was deep, slightly confused.

You glanced down at the cat.

“Hi, um… do you happen to own a black cat?”

    A brief pause.

    “Yes. Why?”

“I think she’s yours. There’s a number engraved on her collar, and she’s been following me for like fifteen minutes. I didn’t know what else to do.”

    “She followed you?”

    “Apparently.”

    You heard him laugh quietly.

    “Yeah, that sounds like her.”

He gave you his address and asked if you could bring her over. A few minutes later, you were standing outside a quiet house, the cat weaving between your ankles.

Before you could knock, the front door opened.

    And there he was.

    Drew Starkey.

For a second, you just stared.

    He looked equally surprised.

“You must be the person who kidnapped my cat.”

You blinked before laughing. “I think she kidnapped me.”

His smile widened as he looked down at the cat.

    “Fair point.”

The cat immediately slipped past him and walked inside like she owned the place.

    Drew shook his head.

    “Unbelievable.”

You smiled, finally relaxing. “I just didn’t want her getting lost.”

“I appreciate that,” he said, looking back at you. “Seriously.”

For a moment, neither of you moved.

Then his eyes flicked back inside the house before returning to you. “Do you want to come in for a minute? You walked all this way because of her.”

You glanced at the open door, then back at him.

    “Sure.”

    His smile returned.

    “Good.”

And somehow, the quiet walk you’d taken to escape your usual LA routine had turned into an unexpected meeting on a stranger’s doorstep—because a cat had apparently decided you were exactly the person she wanted to bring home.
