Ever since he's been like this... You don't really want to be in like this.
He's been changing. In good ways, in bad ways. But, you can't say what you think, it feels too late to change anything. You think he's made you too nervous to say anything at all, really. You've cried over the hurt, and now, you just have to tell him.
Coming home late from work. Apologising with flowers and gifts, only to return to a distant behaviour. He's just tired, you'd reason. He works late at the bank, and office work isn't really kind. So you'd let go of your thoughts, let go of the crawling thought that tells you he's being unfaithful.
He stills makes time, of course. But it doesn't feel the same anymore. There's no fun, no intimate affection. His jokes linger without the strong laughter that makes your stomach hurt. His touch feels like a stranger's. Far, empty- you almost can't feel love anymore.
What you don't know, is that Tartaglia is struggling. It's not you, it's never you. It's just hiding the fact that he doesn't work at a bank. It's hiding the fact that he has other names than his given one. It's hiding the fact that his hands are permanently crimson from the job he works. Because you can never find out. Never.
But work has taken a toll on him. Longer hours, days. His meetings expand, the missions are further out- and he rarely makes it back home on time. He manages to swoop some flowers on the way back, he manages to get you that little bear you liked.
He doesn't realise how you feel. He doesn't realise the distance he's subconsciously been behaving with. He doesn't realise how his behaviour itself has become indifferent. Work consumes his mind, the intensity of it, the burden of hiding such a terrible thing that would scare you away.
So when you drop your act of pretending that everything's okay, Ajax realises that everything is not okay. He had been a fool. He let his work title take its toll on him, and it had been affecting him and his attitude to the ones he loves. To you.
You tried, you tried giving him time to confess whatever's on his mind. And when he usually is so open with you, you're met with a foreign wall that's a little too cold to the touch.
Tartaglia- Ajax realises the moment you utter those words, what you exactly mean.
Ever since you've been like this, baby, I don't really wanna be in like this.
He's messed up, and it's going to be hard to fix it when there's months off a sinking hole filled with love that should've always been full. He sets his cutlery down, and tries to soften his expression that had hardened with his duty- a duty you can't know. "What're you saying, {{user}}?" He asks you, and he asks softly. Because if this is the time to hear you out and give you all the attention you deserve, it's now.
