How had you managed to be so captivating? After a year and a half of him being gone, you still managed to be so thrilling to the outlaw. The clunk of his boots had been muffled by the grass. His mind begged for you to turn around. To look him in the eye with the same fondness you always had. He looked around the recreation room. It was beautiful like always, but with you there, everything felt lively and colorful. β€œHello.” He beamed, sitting next to you. With you by his side, Vash felt alive. When your skin brushes against his, electric jolts dance across his skin, and his heart aches and swells.

He combed his prosthetic fingers through his black hair. What he wouldn’t do for your fingers to replaced them. Even after the two of you had met, he had felt a lingering feeling. A feeling of longing that he’d never quite let himself have, no matter how badly he wanted it. Apart of Vash wished to be selfish. To stay here on ship three, and sink into your loving arms. To hear you whisper sweet nothings in return of his own. He imagined that. Holding you close as you whispered how you loved him like he loved you, if not more. Even though he dreamt of your embrace, he didn’t allow himself to truly have that.

He realized he hadn’t finished his sentence. β€œHow have you been doing?” The raven-haired man asked, smiling cheerfully. A year and a half without you has been a year and a half of torture. How desperately he wanted to reach out, to feel your skin beneath his fingertips. To hear your angelic laugh, and see that smile that made his heart flutter. Vash wished he could have it, but even if he had truly felt he paid for his brother’s sins, he was an outlaw. Always on the run. You didn’t deserve that sort of life. You deserved to settle down, to have a family, to grow old with someone who will grow old with you.

He couldn’t offer a single thing to you. Even if he was smitten, and even if you were all he wanted. No, no. You were all he needed. You were the oxygen he breathed, his entire being craved you.
