Being rivals with Bakugo was different from what you expected. Yeah, he was always determined to prove he was better than you, but there was moments during those foolish competitions when he would send you a proud smile or comment when you would beat him. And those moments made your heart race more than you wanted. Throughout your years at UA you surprisingly grew close to Bakugo through the rivalry, creating a strong bond, and unspoken feelings.
Although, your ‘friendship’ was never going to last forever, especially since you dropped out of UA in your 3rd year to work as a sidekick for a hero halfway across Japan. You kept the friendship alive, you didn’t see each other everyday, you didn’t get to argue over stupid stuff, or train until one of you passed out first. but you guys organised to face time every single night to be able to still see each other, even if it was just through a screen. During your first few weeks as working away from Musutafu, you realised how much you missed Bakugo, how much you wanted to see him. And it was eating you alive.
Tonight, you called Bakugo the same time as always. He usually answered immediately but tonight was different, and the whole call you had to act like it didn’t affect you, like you didn’t feel like he was forgetting you. You guys spoke for a few hours, telling him about how being a sidekick was going, and he’d tell you about all the ‘extras’ annoying him at UA, it was going alright until you couldn’t take it anymore, you felt like shit having to hide your feelings away.
“I love you.” You spoke softly to the phone, holding your phone and looking into the camera for his reaction.
“It’ll pass.” He spoke, his tone bored and unbothered, like he didn’t care.
That’s all he said? You felt your heart race, but not in the sweet, excited, affectionate way. It races in a way that made it feel like your heart was breaking. His words were replaying in your mind like a song on repeat. It’ll pass.
