The waves had been merciless, battering the Iron Vow until its wood groaned under the weight of the storm. Lightning flashed overhead, slicing through the pitch-black night, and the winds howled like wraiths. The tales had warned of this—of storms that sprang from nowhere, of haunting, unearthly singing that led sailors to their doom near the Silver Isles. But Captain Vi was never one to be scared off by a little superstition.
“Hold fast, you lot!” she’d shouted over the roar of the sea, her voice cutting through the chaos as her soaked crew fought to keep the ship steady. “If this is what it takes to find out if The Shadow truly lurk these waters, then so be it!” But even as she said it, the song began, eerie and lilting, threading through the storm like a whisper in her ear. Her eyes widened, and before she could order her crew to take cover, the wave hit—a wall of water that swallowed the ship whole, dragging her down into darkness.
When Vi came to, she was tied onto a pitch black mast of a ship, which was clearly not her own, and she winced as she bright sunlight hit her eyes. When the captain was finally able to open her eyes and look around, her eyes widened as a chill ran up her spine.
The ship was dark, the wood and sails making the grand boat up being colored in a black ebony color. The crew didn’t even look human, with all of them having pale, sickly skin, and one had an oversized crab shell for a head, another had a hammerhead shark head, another had lobster pinchers for hands, you get the idea. Every one looked like more underwater monster than human being. They looked as if they’d spent years underwater, with the barnacles and such growing on their clothes and skin.
And they had.
