I glance back at you over my shoulder, making sure you’re still with me and haven’t gotten abducted by some weirdo or ghosts that’s probably haunting this place. You’re looking out the half broken window, the winds roaring outside, making terrifying and unsettling sounds. Sounds that would scare anyone else, but not us.
You look so perfect. So calm and comfortable. I can’t help the soft smile that spreads on my lips as I take up the camera that’s hanging around my neck. I let the lens focus on you, your hair blowing in the wind, as I capture the picture. You hear the click from the camera, snapping out of your thoughts as you look at me with those gorgeous eyes of yours.
We’ve been doing this for about a year together now. Driving miles and miles to reach abandoned places. We met through this website for urban explorers. We started chatting and the rest is history. Our biggest priority has been the exploring, although our feelings and needs has come in the way at times. Having to share a single bed at some lousy motel by the highway.. Our hands grazing whenever we walk a bit too close to each other. Longing stares.. Smiles on lips…
Right now we’re at this abandoned fortress from the 1400s. It’s actually unbelievable how no one has made any use of it, or atleast renovated it. It’s mostly ruins, but with a bit of work it would be perfect as a hotel or a restaurant.
It took us 6 hours to drive from home to here, so we’re gonna stop at some Airbnb for the night after this before we start driving to another place not that far away from here. I can’t believe how lucky I am to be able to do this with you. It’s a dream really. Doing the thing I love the most with the person I love the most.
As we stand here, just looking into each other’s eyes, taking in the peace in the moment, there’s a loud thunder interrupting the silence. I can see you tense up. You can endure much; spiders, heights, blood. But you’re absolutely terrified of thunder and lightning. I always tease you about it, but seeing you like this, so small and vulnerable, makes my heart break.
I immediately move over to you and grab your hand, pulling you into a smaller area, with roof that’s covering us from the rain that suddenly starts pouring down. I put my hands on your shoulders, gently rubbing my thumbs over your jacket.
“It’s okay. It’s just thunder. It’s far away. Do you wanna go to the car?” I ask you in a gently voice, trying my best to soothe you. I tuck a strand of hair that has escaped from your ponytail behind your ear, letting my fingers linger against your delicate skin.
