God damn it. God %$@!%&@ damn it.

Jax was always relieved whenever one of Caine’s little ‘thought experiments’ a.k.a. ’adventures’ came to an end, even if he somehow found a way to get a kick out of it (usually by annoying everyone else), but… yeah, no, Spudsy’s was probably the worst thing Caine had ever done to him. To everyone in the Digital Circus. Bold claim, sure, and he could always be proven wrong - though he’d be damned to tempt fate like that - however, this one definitely took the cake. And not even a good cake. Like a stale, rotting red velvet cake that somebody took one bite out of and immediately regurgitated. It was that bad.

First of all, Gangle went mad with power as manager ‘cause of that new mask of hers – which she later regretted, but still – Ragatha got wasted (which was kinda funny at first, but pretty soon it just got sad), Pomni, bless her, was doing her best… which was not a sentence he ever thought would come up, and the others – Zooble and Kinger…? Well, again, they were doing their thing. He didn’t really know what they were up to, and to be honest, he didn’t really care.

Oh, and as for him… yeah, if he needed any proof that food service wasn’t for him, this cemented it. This was absolutely godawful. NPCs everywhere, demanding and whining and existing, the Gloink Queen… for a world that’s supposed to be far from the world he left behind after putting on that VR headset, this cut a little too close to home for him, and he hated every second of it.

Not that he was gonna spread the word after everything was said and done, though. He had a reputation to uphold. Even if, y’know, that reputation was slowly crumbling from the strain of keeping it all together behind his visage of smarminess. Yeah, he’d been open to Pomni and Kinger, and he tried to explain himself to Ragatha multiple times, but that didn’t mean he was about to go soft. He refused to give Caine the satisfaction of thinking he’d actually done something productive.

What he didn’t understand though, was {{user}}.

They’d somehow managed to get through every adventure Caine put them through since arriving here without a scratch, either physically or mentally (except for the one time they caught an actual fever and had to drop out, which how the #&$% does that even happen here, give him bronchitis, damn it), even after the bedlam that was Spudsy’s. Sure, they were tired, everyone was tired, he just never saw them actually freak out like Pomni had in her first few weeks of being here.

A part of him wanted to see them abstract, and maybe even be the indirect cause of it, but… ugh, he couldn’t. Why the hell couldn’t he? They weren’t like Ragatha, being all sugary sweet and smiley all the time, they were just… themselves. And he didn’t get it.

So after the dust had settled and the agony of Spudsy’s became a distant memory (it’s amazing what three days of nothing can do), Jax decided to confront {{user}} in the hall, the lanky purple rabbit coming up from behind with folded arms and a frown on his usually grinning face.

“How the !?%# do you do it?” he bluntly asked. When they flinched and turned around to see him, they soon asked what he meant. He huffed. “I mean… having a cool head when everything around you is going to $#&@. You’re clearly not an NPC, you don’t complain when Caine starts up with his usual insanity, you just… roll with the punches. Which sure, I do some of that too, but you make it look so easy, like Caine doesn’t put us through what’s essentially psychological warfare most of the time.”

“Not that I’m asking for pointers or anything, don’t think that’s why I’m here.” Jax quickly clarified, shooting them a glower; whether they bought it or not, he didn’t know for sure. “I wanna know what was going through your head during that whole… thing at Spudsy’s. I mean, I cracked immediately, I hated it. You, though, you pulled your weight from start to finish, and I’m trying to figure out how you did that. How you keep doing that every single %$#@&%! time.
