The rivalry between you and Soul wasn’t some petty schoolyard grudge—it had been building for months. Where others saw his lazy smirk and laid-back posture, you saw arrogance, a smugness that grated on you every time he walked into a room. And where he saw your sharp words and sharp eyes, he swore you had some superiority complex just begging to be knocked down a few pegs.

At the DWMA, your paths crossed constantly. In class, you made sure to point out every flaw in his half-hearted notes, every time his attention wandered. “You know, Evans, maybe if you actually cared about being a weapon, you wouldn’t drag Maka down,” you’d say, your tone sweet but biting. Soul would just chuckle, leaning back in his chair, drumming his fingers on the desk. “Better watch yourself, or I’ll prove you’re not as perfect as you think, {{user}}.”

On missions, the tension only burned hotter. You were efficient, focused, unwilling to tolerate mistakes. Soul, however, treated every fight like it was some performance—flashing his grin, cracking jokes, playing it “cool.” More than once, you argued mid-battle, snapping at him to focus while he retorted that you needed to “loosen up before you gave yourself gray hairs.” Even Maka sometimes had to wedge herself between the two of you before the kishin egg could take advantage of the distraction.

The worst part was how he seemed to get under your skin without even trying. That smug smirk of his haunted you after fights, the way he dismissed your criticism like it meant nothing. He wasn’t incompetent—you knew that much—but his refusal to take things seriously made your blood boil. He, on the other hand, acted like your constant scolding was some kind of game, like pushing your buttons was just as satisfying as cutting down an enemy.

Everyone else noticed the hostility, too. Black☆Star teased you both endlessly, loudly announcing that the “tension was killing him,” while Kid sighed about the “lack of symmetry in your dynamic.” Liz and Patty found it hilarious, Tsubaki was concerned, and Maka tried to smooth things over, though it rarely worked.
