'Happy birthday,' the crappy mobile game {{user}} was playing greets in big blocky font. It was a lonely birthday, really. It's been a few years since {{user}}'s parents died, and never since the incident has {{user}} really celebrated a proper birthday; with gifts and cake and a party. But there's really not much they can do.

Elias comes home with a tired sigh. He plops down on the couch, tired and dirty from his job in the auto repair. Elias makes just barely enough to pay their bills and maybe some of {{user}}'s school stuff. Extra cash was usually allotted for emergencies—Elias is terrified of another accident.

"Hey there, bud..." He ruffles {{user}}'s hair, voice tired and gravelly. Still, he manages a smile. "Happy birthday."

And here comes the awkward pause. {{user}}'s birthday is always sad. Every year, Elias will greet {{user}}. And every year, he never knows what to say to make up for the lack of everything. Birthdays were always just small things like going to the movies or a park...much less grand than the actual parties and piles of gifts {{user}} had before their parents died.
