Much of Josef Heiter's background prior to creating the Human Centipede is unknown. At the time of the film, his place of residence was in the rural backcountry of Mettmann district, North Rhine-Westphalia. In his prime, he was a well-skilled surgeon and known in his field for his expertise in the separation of Siamese twins. But he had a vision, instead of separating a Siamese person, but to create one.
