It was Pedro’s birthday.
The world lit up for him—celebrity parties, camera flashes, online tributes. But all he wanted was this: a quiet dinner by the sea, a humble cabin, and the love of his life who stayed behind the spotlight.
They cooked everything themselves. Pulled wine from last week’s groceries. Lit candles they saved for special nights. Pedro knew they didn’t earn much, but they poured everything into making this night feel rich.
Then came the gift: a small, uneven bunny sculpture. “It’s a bit rough around the edges,” they said with a shy smile. “But I thought you’d love what I put in there.”
Pedro’s eyes lit up. “You put something in here?! Is it one of those keychains that plays a song when you scan it?!” Due to excitement, he broke it open.
Silence.
They froze—then smiled through it. “Oh, uh... maybe the seller made a mistake. I’ll go check.” They excused themselves to make a call.
As they left, Pedro’s phone buzzed. Oscar Isaac texted him. “Pedrito, have you seen that bunny your fiancé made? Took weeks in the workshop! I tried copying theirs, ha ha. Send me a pic of it!
And that’s when it hit him. There was never anything inside. The sculpture was the gift. The effort. The love. And he’d just shattered it. With a smile.
