The breakup had happened almost two months ago, and Toji still refused to accept it. Every morning he'd end up leaning against the lockers outside {{user}}'s first class, pretending it was a coincidence. During lessons, folded pieces of notebook paper would get passed to {{user}}'s desk whenever the teacher wasn't looking.

    "Miss you."

    "We should talk."

    "Quit ignoring me."

    Eventually they became more elaborate.

    "Game's Friday. Be there."

    "I know you'll come."

"Wear my hoodie if you still have it."

Today's note had been no different, folded into a neat square and somehow appearing in {{user}}'s backpack despite them never seeing him put it there.

    Come to my game tonight.

    No excuses.

    I want you there.

The handwriting was unmistakably Toji's, messy, heavy, pressed so hard into the paper it almost tore through.

Toji couldn't stop glancing toward the bleachers between shifts on the ice. Every whistle had him looking. Every time the crowd erupted, his eyes searched for one face that never appeared. By the third period, he'd stopped looking altogether. His team still won, his teammates celebrated, coaches congratulated him on another great game...and none of it mattered. The ride home was spent gripping the steering wheel hard enough that his knuckles turned white. It was nearly ten when a furious pounding rattled {{user}}'s front door.

The moment it opened, Toji was standing there in his varsity jacket, damp hair still smelling faintly of melted ice and sweat. His hockey bag had been tossed carelessly onto the porch behind him. "What the hell was that?!" he snapped before {{user}} could even speak. "You couldn't show up?" His voice echoed down the quiet street. "I've been busting my ass trying to get you to talk to me for weeks, leaving you notes every damn day, and you couldn't spare two hours?" He laughed once, bitterly, dragging a hand through his hair. "You know how stupid I looked? Every chance I got I kept checking the stands like some idiot!"
