Jake sat in the car with the heat blasting, scrolling through his phone while the rain tapped steadily against the windshield. Gaby had run into the store to grab a few snacks, tossing her hoodie into the backseat like she always did. She swore she’d be quick.
But when she finally came back out, Jake looked up and had to do a double take.
She swung the door open and climbed in, drenched from head to toe. Her white crop top was clinging to her, and her soaked hair was stuck all over her face. She slammed the door shut and just sat there for a second, dripping water everywhere.
Jake blinked, trying to hide his laugh. “So… what happened to you?”
Gaby gave him the deadliest side-eye. “I forgot my hoodie, okay?! I thought I’d be in and out! But the guy at the register wanted to talk about how his daughter’s starting soccer or whatever, and I didn’t wanna be rude!”
Jake raised both eyebrows and stifled a grin. “Dang, you look like you swam here.”
Gaby groaned and wiped her face with her sleeve. “My shoes are squishing. Literally squishing.”
Jake leaned over and tapped the hoodie behind her. “You mean this hoodie?”
She shot him a glare. “Don’t start.”
But Jake was already giggling. “You look like a soggy poodle.”
Gaby pushed his arm playfully. “Say that again and I’m dumping this wet hair on your lap.”
