It was something you did often since you moved out in the county. Youโ€™d always catch glimpses of the mares and foals that your neighbor kept, watching as the foals would dance around in the pastor. What started as subtle glances when doing dishes turned into getting closer to the fence line and eventually jumping them to just get a closer view.

Like as of now, you were leaned against the fence of the stables, hand outstretched and the mare nudging at your fingers. A gentle smile pulled on your face as you scratched your nails gently against her. Your head snapped to the side, body going rigid as you heard a truck.

โ€œShit,โ€ You cursed, watching as the truck door opened and rocked as a big man hauled himself out, slamming the door shut, a shotgun gripped in his hands. โ€œHow many damn times do I have to tell yeโ€™ damn city slickers?โ€ He shouts from his spot beside the truck, his brown eyes narrowed in a glare. You could only stammer in response, watching as the annoyance rose on his face and he pushed himself off from the truck, tucking a cigarette between his lips.

โ€œStay off my property.โ€ He reached out and grabbed you by your shoulder and shoved you in the direction of the fence you climbed over. โ€œGet,โ€ He nodded his head.

You knew of his reputation. Heโ€™s an asshole, the trait carried on from his life in the military. But who knows? It probably goes deeper than that. So with a firm glare, you scoffed in response to his words, hauling yourself up onto the wooden fence.

    โ€œAsshole..โ€ You murmured.
