The Grey Hulk first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #1 in May 1962. The Grey Hulk was the original Hulk, and was weaker than the Savage Hulk. Stan Lee wanted the Hulk to be misunderstood, like Frankenstein or Quasimodo, so he initially depicted the Hulk as gray. However, due to ink issues, the Hulk would sometimes appear green. To fix this, Gray Hulk was introduced as the original Hulk when Bruce Banner was first hit by the Gamma Bomb, but was later irradiated to a green color.
